The Litany and the Neglect of Avarice
Within the Litany in the Book of Common Prayer, there is a section called the Deprecations. To deprecate means to “ward off,” so the Deprecations list out bad influences and consequences from which the Assembly prays to be “delivered” or rescued. For example
Trom all evil and mischief; from sin, from the crafts and assaults of the devil; from thy wrath, and from everlasting damnation,
Good Lord, deliver us.
expanded by Cranmer draw from Gregory's Moralia, the source of the "deadly sins" -- which in Gregory are fountainheads of other sins or devilish generals each leading their own host. One of the generals or fountainheads that Cranmer doesn't include in the deprecations is avarice and the host under that demon's command. I propose, therefore, this additional deprecation:
From avarice, from fraud and cruelty, from a lying tongue, a false balance, and the hand of the oppressor,
Good Lord, deliver us.
